The Current Truth™ is that there is a gulf once known as the Gulf of Mexico and now known as the Gulf of America (at least in the U.S.)

Get used to it.

The Gulf of Mexico name is officially recognized by the International Hydrographic Organization, which is not under U.S. control (but the U.S. is not obligated to adhere to its decisions either).

Almost all of the Gulf’s shoreline was once part of “The Spanish Main” during the period of Spanish conquest and colonization. Currently, the US portion of the Gulf coastline is about 1,700 miles, while Mexico’s portion is about 1,100 miles.

NOTE: Wikipedia’s article on this topic obfuscates this fact by not directly including including Mexico’s portion of the coastline and instead giving a figure that includes all of Mexico’s eastern cost’s length, Caribbean included.

PREVIOUS GULF NAMES

“Heap Big Salty Water Place Where Sun Rise” - Pre-Columbian Aztecs

“Unnamed” - Despite Amerigo Vespucci’s 1497 survey of its coast

“Still Unnamed” - Despite being mapped by Spaniards in the early 1500s

"Gulf of Florida" - Early Spanish explorers

"Gulf of Cortés" - Early Spanish explorers.

"Gulf of St.Michael" - Early European maps

"Gulf of Yucatán" - Early European maps

"Yucatán Sea" - Early European maps

"Great Antillean Gulf" - Early European maps

"Cathayan Sea" - Early European maps

"Gulf of New Spain" - Early (Spanish) European maps

"Gulf of Mexico" - a 1550 world map

“Sea of the North” - 1584 map by a Spaniard

"Mexican Cove" - Spanish Admiralty charts, 1700s

"Mexican Sound” - Spanish Admiralty charts, 1700s

“Gulf of America” - Proposed repeatedly to U.S. Board of Geographical Names by some rando (1999-2012); named by by U.S. Presidential executive order (2025).

Obviously, changing the name of the Gulf is a time-honored tradition.

NAME ACCEPTANCE OR RECOGNITION

Google will be changing its maps voluntarily because it sees which way the wind is blowing.

Leftists will be changing their panties frequently because they're wetting their panties frequently because of predictable TDS over the name change.

WHY THE CHANGE?

Simple answer: To rise to the reality that the Gulf is no longer dominated by Spain and the U.S. owns the plurality of its coastline.

Simpler answer: To thwart the Biden executive order banning further U.S. oil or gas exploration or drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, which no longer exists (with that name).

Simplest answer:
